First Visit to the Airport to Watch Planes in 2021

After entering 2021, due to the worsening pandemic situation, the Japanese government once again declared a state of emergency. Although there was no strict lockdown, economic activities like tourism and business travel came to a standstill again.

I have been working from home for nearly a year, and my camera has basically been sitting idle. I really don’t know how long this situation will last. To change my mood, I occasionally come to Haneda Airport for a walk; otherwise, I might even forget how to take photos.

I started by wandering aimlessly around Terminal 3. In the huge Tokyo International Airport, the vast majority of flights were canceled, with only a handful of international flights operating daily—a truly desolate sight.

A British Airways Boeing 787-9 flying to London. This is my first time photographing a BA 787 in Tokyo, so I guess it’s a small gain.

With no international flights around, I left Terminal 3 and took the free airport bus to check out Terminal 2. I noticed a new PCR testing station on the 1st floor; this is just part of the “new normal” under the pandemic.

Lufthansa’s A350-9 flying to Frankfurt, <img src=https://imgproc.airliners.net/photos/airliners/1/6/4/6312461.jpg?v=v4263e0ef8b9> This is probably the second time I’ve photographed a Lufthansa A350 in the new livery at Haneda.

Approaching evening, I moved to Terminal 1 to watch the sunset. A JAL domestic flight A350 was just pushing back from the Jet Bridge; the light and shadow effects were perfect.

The light after sunset in winter is most charming, and today did not disappoint.

Since I didn’t bring a wide-angle lens, this last one was shot with an iPhone. But the phone’s photo quality is so outstanding that I suppose I’ll use my camera less and less in the future. .
