Throwback to the Old Days: HondaJet HA-420
Continuing with the series of old photos from the COVID-19 pandemic era, today we are featuring the HondaJet HA-420. All photos were taken at the 2018 Farnborough Airshow.
The HondaJet HA-420 is the first aircraft developed by Honda Aircraft Company. The HondaJet is an unconventional low-wing monoplane, featuring a composite fuselage and an aluminum wing. The aircraft is equipped with two GE Honda Aero Engines HF120 turbofan engines mounted on the wings. It features retractable landing gear, with both main landing gear and the nose gear being of the single-wheel type.
The HondaJet's over-the-wing engine mount design is primarily intended to maximize cabin space, while reducing wave Drag and increasing the Mach number. The nose and wings are designed for laminar flow; the integration of the engine, nose, and fuselage is based on results obtained from computer simulations and wind tunnel testing.
Honda claims that the aircraft’s combination of lightweight materials, aerodynamics, and efficient engines allows the HondaJet to achieve up to 17% better fuel efficiency compared to similar aircraft. When cruising at 43,000 feet, it consumes only 339 liters (89.5 gallons) of fuel per hour.
The GE Honda HF120 engine utilizes a single fan, a dual-stage compressor, and a two-stage turbine. It received FAA certification on December 13, 2013, and obtained production certification in 2015.
