How Much Fuel Is Prepared for a One-Hour Flight?
Another low-pressure day, with persistent rain—perfect for staying in and organizing photos. I found this shot I took a few months ago from the observation deck at Terminal 2 of Haneda Airport. It shows an Obbli ground crew refueling an All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 787-9 for a Tokyo-Osaka flight. On the left, a female pilot is performing a walk-around inspection.
After they finished fueling, I got curious about the actual amount, so I zoomed in with my telephoto lens and got this result:
You can see the panel display indicates a total of 15,332 liters of aviation fuel were added. (Of course, we have no idea how much was already in the tanks.)
According to Wikipedia, the maximum fuel capacity of the 787-9 is 138,710 liters. So for a flight like Tokyo-Osaka that only takes about an hour, filling just over a tenth of the tank is sufficient. By the way, ANA’s domestic 787-9 has 395 seats, which is 60 more than the domestic version of the 787-8.
I also took out my E6-B Flight Computer to practice converting liters to weight.
First, align the FUEL LBS red arrow on the outer scale with the LITERS red arrow on the inner scale. The inner scale value of 15.3 corresponds to 24.2 on the outer scale. Therefore, 15,300 liters converts to 24,200 pounds of fuel.
Next, align the LBS red arrow on the outer scale with the KG red arrow on the inner scale. The outer scale value of 24 corresponds to 11 on the inner scale. Thus, we get that 24,000 pounds converts to 1.1 tons of fuel.
That day, I also captured a special livery aircraft.
A Boeing 737-400 from JTA, a JAL subsidiary, sporting a retro livery reminiscent of the defunct Southwest Air Lines (SWAL) from over 20 years ago. SWAL was established in 1967 and mainly operated local routes around Okinawa. In 1993, it was renamed Japan Transocean Air (JTA), and the livery was subsequently changed to the JAL style.
