A Trip on Flight HA458

Taking a night flight from Haneda to Honolulu that arrives around noon is quite comfortable. You just sleep after boarding, wake up for breakfast, and then disembark. Since you have the rest of the afternoon to go shopping, you hardly feel the jet lag at all.

However, there is one downside: there is very little enjoyment in the middle of the night. You can only look at the islands and the ocean before landing. So, the plan for this flight was quite monotonous, consisting mainly of sleeping. Recently, I don’t seem to watch movies on planes anymore; I only look at the route map on the entertainment system.

Of course, I had to find some fun. I remembered I once wrote about <a href=https://yinlei.org/x-plane10/big5.php?p=2014/12/ozawa-sensei-flight-log.html>Mr. Ozawa’s logbook, and decided to learn from him.

However, designing and making a travel log myself is too troublesome, so I bought one online beforehand. It looks quite nice, doesn’t it?

In recent years, my departure experiences at Haneda have always been either RWY34R or RWY05. This time, RWY16L was used, which is very rare. Unfortunately, it was night and we couldn’t see ground references. What a pity.

Before departure, following the usual routine, I went to the observation deck on the roof of the terminal to take some commemorative photos. You can see that Haneda is still very busy in the middle of the night.

Regarding the logbook, I filled in the data I knew beforehand, such as the aircraft registration number, flight route, METAR, departure time, etc. As soon as I boarded, I handed it to the flight attendant.

I didn’t really have high expectations for the result. But when I got it back, I found the crew was so serious. They actually filled in so much content! Not only did everyone sign and leave messages, but the pilot also helped update the flight data. I was truly moved!

Thanks to all the cabin and cockpit crew members on this flight. I salute you!

Based on the data provided by the pilot, I drew the route on SkyVector. It looks basically like a Great Circle route, which is very different from the return trip. I’ll summarize that later.

But the biggest surprise was yet to come. While preparing to disembark, I discovered I could visit the cockpit. Of course, I wouldn’t give up this opportunity. I sat in the captain’s seat and played captain for a bit. Hehe.

The pilot later gave me the actual flight plan form used. This was yet another surprise:

The aircraft flown that day was an Airbus A330-200, registration number N370HA. Once again, thank you to everyone who worked the flight that day!
