Some New Features of the Boeing 787-9
Based on this interview article about the ANA 787-9, some more information about the 787-9 has been obtained. Here are the excerpts.
First, quite surprisingly, the 787-9 has more Flaps positions than the 787-8. The 787-8 has positions 0, 1, 5, 15, 20, 25, and 30, while the 787-9 has added three settings: 10, 17, and 18.
I really wonder why so many settings are needed?
Also, the leading edge of the 787-9’s horizontal tail is equipped with HyBrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC), which can reduce air Drag by 0.5%, saving 22 tons of fuel per year.

The main landing gear features a new Early Doors Function. One second after takeoff, the landing gear doors automatically open. When the pilot pulls the landing gear lever, moves it to the Up position, and locks it in place, the wheels retract immediately. This shortens the time the landing gear remains exposed, reducing air Drag and improving takeoff performance. Therefore, given the same Runway distance, the 787-9 can achieve a greater payload.

In addition, the model designation “BOEING 787-8”, which was previously marked on the rear fuselage, has been removed on the 787-9.
