How to create X-Plane flight animation video on Mac

First, you need to download a middleware called Soundflower. This free software allows you to control audio and route it freely between various applications. Soundflower system extension for interapplication audio routing. In other words, it allows you to pass audio as input to an app, or read audio from an app, simply by routing it through Soundflower.

You can download Soundflower from here. The latest version is Soundflower-1.6.6b.dmg. After installation, a Soundflower subdirectory will appear in your Applications folder. The executable file inside is called Soundflowerbed.app. Once you double-click to launch it, the Soundflower icon will appear in the top status bar of Mac OS, as shown below.

Here, we set the 2-channel audio Soundflower (2ch) to the Built-in Output item.

Then, in System Settings, set both the input and output devices in the sound options to Soundflower (2ch).

Next, install a small free software called LINE. You can find its address here. This is also a middleware that allows you to forward audio to speakers or headphones for easy recording while recording.

Alright, preparations are complete. Now we can finally start recording the video.

Launch X-Plane, start a flight, and then open Replay mode. I specifically assigned a button on my Saitek Throttle Quadrant (Saitek Three Level Pro Throttle Quadrant) for Replay mode. Please refer to the image below for the configuration method.

Next, launch the QuickTime Player included with Mac OS. You can use its “New Screen Recording” feature (QuickTime Player: Screen Recording) to produce high-quality video recordings. The usage of this feature is very simple, so I won’t explain it in detail here. You can refer to this Chinese guide or this English guide.

Note that you must select the correct microphone before starting recording. Here, we need to use Soundflower (2ch).

Below is a video of practicing helicopter landings at Honolulu Airport in Hawaii. The results are pretty good, right?
